Back to reality

The three worst words that anyone can say.

Yet we all end up saying it. After vacation, after a long night out, Sunday hits and then it’s “back to reality.”

Yes we have to pay our way to live, we have to continue working just to make ends meet, but the fact that reality consists of sacrificing most of your time for someone else is just kind of sad.

There’s two solutions to this.

Self acceptance is the first option. Simply accepting that reality is the combination of sacrifice and freedom to do what you want. Therefore escaping the thought that “reality” is the necessity to go back to work for the next two months with hardly any freedom other than the weekend.

This form of acceptance may trick the brain into thinking that reality is where we’re currently at, enjoying a concert, and in order to enjoy those things we must work to have the freedom to do so.

The second option is a lot more radical. It’s about taking more risk. Instead of living a life where reality is just an endless loop of working to have very little time off, we could take control of this fact and design a life where we can have as much time off as we choose.

We can go into the office when we’d like to, and have nice lunches during the week instead of only on the weekend.

The problem with this is that you have to sacrifice more in the beginning than what seems healthy. You give up your time, your friends, you are utterly in the grind. Building a company or starting your own venture takes an exorbitant amount of hard work. But once when you reach a point where the business is self-sustaining, or you are able to sell your business for a major profit. Then you will be free.

The difference is this: Would you rather live a life of give and take, clocking in, clocking out, or would you sacrifice your time now, to be able to be free later.
